 Vinegar Etched Bowl Technique
#2 |
Note: These colors are only a suggestion. Often,
it is more fun to do a technique when you choose colors you
like.
If you've never painted on greenware before just remember
that it breaks easily. Don't pick up your bowl by the top edge, don't clunk it
down on the table. Handle carefully, but don't be afraid of trying this
project. It can be lots of fun!
Clean your greenware and wipe down with
a soft, damp sponge. Lightly sketch flowers and leaves around the outside of
your bowl in a design you find pleasing. Condition a round brush (TB730 or TB
731 are a good size) with liquid detergent, use your fingers to work the soap
into the bristles, remove excess detergent from the brush using a paper
towel. Paint the Mask 'n Peel on your flowers and leaves, covering entire
area inside design. Allow to dry. Wash your brush immediately to avoid
having Mask 'n Peel harden in the bristles. Pour vinegar into a cup. Dip a
large brush into the vinegar and drip onto the top edge of your bowl and down
the side. Carefully paint the entire outside of your bowl with the vinegar. It
will bubble and boil, making the rough texture you see on the bowl in the
picture. The masked areas will remain smooth. You can apply more vinegar if
the texture isn't to your liking. Only you can determine when the texture is
rough enough! If you like deep craters, drip vinegar in one spot. If you want
holes in your bowl (for luminaries, etc.) keep dripping vinegar on the same
spot until it eats through, but be aware that the inside of your bowl will
develope rough 'vinegar runs'. When your bowl is roughened to your liking, set
it aside until it is dry. Mix one tablespoon of Mint Julep with two
tablespoons water (more paint and water may be needed if your bowl is large).
Wash this mixture over the outside of your bowl, working color into the deep
crevases so that your bowl is completely covered. Color will be very pale. If
you like you may wash the inside of your bowl with this mixture, too. Peel off
the Mask 'n Peel. Do this by carefully running the side of your finger or thumb
over the edge of the mask. When the product begins to lift, carefully pick it
up with your fingers and pull away. You must get all this product off!! Now
you can begin to paint your flowers and leaves. When using Cover Coats remember
that you must apply three complete coats for full opaque coverage. When your
paint is dry, use the darker shades to outline or shade your flowers and
leaves. Outline parts of flowers with black, and dot flower center to add
detail.
When dry, fire to cone 04. To finish bowl, coat with clear
glaze, stilt and fire to cone 06.
