Brush Care

One of the most important tips you can learn is to take care of your brushes. A good brush, well taken care of, can last for many years. After every use you should wash your brushes well, with warm soapy water. Brush the bristles back and forth on the palm of your hand to lather them up and get them good and clean. Never be rough with them, never smash them into the bottom of a bowl or pounce them up and down. This can break the bristles and lead to them falling out.

Always blot your washed brushes with paper towels, then lay them flat to dry. Do not stand them in a cup with the bristles pointing upward. This will allow the water to run down into the ferrule (the metal part) and cause it to rust.

To reshape old brushes, wash them in hot water and rub them over the glue section of an envelope, then shape. Lay them flat to dry, then let the brushes sit until needed. When ready to paint, rinse off the glue and have fun painting.

Keep a length of brown Kraft tape with your painting supplies. After cleaning your brushes, you can stroke them on the glue-side of the kraft tape to transfer the glue to your brushes. Groom the brush hairs and let dry. This will stiffen the brushes for safety during traveling, but the glue will wash out like sizing when it's time to paint again.

Leaving soap on your brushes after cleaning them also helps them to hold their shape. Just be sure to rinse the soap out before you paint again.
Always buy the best brushes you can afford, and take care of them so they last a long, long time.
