Insider Tip - Old Ways With Courtyards

We have been reminded that there are a lot of new ceramists reading our newsletter and there are TONS of techniques they don't know! So, here are just a few ideas about interesting ways to use Courtyards. For detailed descriptions of the techniques, and the actual colors used in the pictures, click on the link below each picture.

1. Paint a design on your bisque using Concepts Underglaze for Bisque. When dry, coat the entire piece with 3 coats of your choice of Courtyards glaze, stilt and fire to cone 06. After firing, your Concepts design will have moved up through the glaze so that your design is visible and beautiful. (Rooster below)

2. Paint your bisque piece using your choice of Courtyards glaze, 3 coats. When dry paint flowers or another design, using Concepts or EZ Strokes, on top of the Courtyards glaze. Stilt and fire to cone 06. No clear glaze is necessary! (Bowl below)

3. Paint 2-3 coats of Concepts over a highly detailed mug or other object (we used a stein). When dry, use a damp sponge to wipe the color back, leaving it only in the crevises so that the detail stands out and the high spots are free of color. Cover the detailed area with 3 coats of your choice of Courtyards glaze. The dark area on the stein is 3 good, flowing coats of the same Concepts color. No clear glaze was added. (Stein below)

4. Use Concepts colors of your choice to do the bubble technique on bisque. When the bubbles are to your liking, cover them with 3 coats of a Courtyard glaze, stilt and fire. (Sorry, no picture)

You can also paint 3 coats of Courtyards glaze on your bisque piece and then flick or spritz Concepts or EZ Strokes color over the entire painted surface. Stilt and fire. Or, rather than flicking or spritzing color, try sponging one coat of another Courtyards color over the first color- like Hearthstone over Sagebrush - for an interesting effect.

Since we are visiting ways to glaze with Courtyards, it just seems appropriate to feature one of our favorite Courtyard colors. So, here is an older, but gorgeous and versatile glaze you should know about ~ CY113 Hearthstone. This glaze, mixed with equal amounts of clear satin glaze, makes a beautiful background for painting your favorite designs.
