Insider Tips

We had a great response to last month's Insider Tip! Here are just a few examples of our readers ideas:

"Here's my new use for an old mold -- which is about all I've got :)
I have a mold I bought on E-bay and it is of a butterfly with sort of deep areas which represent colored spaces in the butterfly's wings. I have my "Ceramics Camp" ten-year olds paint the outer edges of the bisque-fired ware's wings and body in black fun strokes, which have the glaze mixed in with the paint. Then they place different colored glass pieces, either bought at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. (I can use broken beer and wine bottles if they are a pretty color, but I don't advise letting children use these -- too risky!) Then I fire at a temp just low enough to melt glass. Beautiful and each is unique. The kids love it!

A similar idea I do myself with another 'old mold' I bought on E-bay (please don't ask how much I spent one year on mold purchases and shipping costs from E-bay. Suffice it to say the UPS guy and I were rumored to be having a romance!) It is an ash tray of a polar bear looking at a salmon swimmimg in shallow water. Now I make it in all white with only the bear's eyes, nose, claws and the fish painted. Then I put crushed blue glass shards in the pool area and glass fire. So pretty and easy that most people don't recognise it as an old ash tray. And since some people do smoke, although I do not, it is nice for them to find a pretty ash tray to place on their patio or porch. I put one of these in a gift shop at a nearby lake and instantly had an order for ten more."

Good day...best way (to reuse old molds) is to simply learn to combine greenware. With a little creative thinking, any old mold can produce great items when combined with other old, out of touch molds. For instance...If you have a mushroom plate that hasn't sold since the fifties, just pour a flat backed piece of greenware and attach it and ta da! A great wall hanging. Or even take and trim the back of a fairy and slip stick her on the mushroom. Works like a charm and can start clearing away of the creative cobwebs. Enjoy...
