Insider Tip - Finding Inspiration

"After returning from a trip to Australia, I got creative in painting my ceramics bowl. I drew crocodiles, emus and kangaroos "Australian Aborigine" style and painted in the basic, primitive shapes. Then I did all detail work in points of color applied with the handle end of my brush, dipping in the paint once for each dot to keep the dots all the same size. No need to apply repeated coats since the paint was the proper thickness. Background was three distinct colors, covered completely in a second color of dots. The finished design was spectacular! Dots did not flake off during firing. Over this all, I applied a satin glaze for the glaze firing and black satin for the back of the bowl. My husband thinks this is the nicest thing I've made in a long time.

P.S. I adapted the designs from a dish towel I bought as a souvenir!"

News About Gold

In case you haven't heard - Hanovia gold, lusters, halos, etc. have been discontinued by the manufacturer. Duncan is one of the few companies still supplying gold for ceramics. Their products are tried and true, high quality and available for your every gold need. Here are the latest prices for Duncan's gold products:

OA901 - Essence -   $6.00   1/2 oz
OG801 - Bright Gold - $16.00   2grams
OG802 - White Gold - $16.00   2grams
OG805 - Premium Gold - $25.00   2grams

Tips for applying Metallics:

1. Work in a well ventilated area, not windy or dusty.
2. Because metals always settle, turn bottle over and allow metals to fall, to mix the product to an even suspension. Do not shake vigorously. This can cause tiny air bubbles which may look like black spots on your fired gold.
3. Use a NEW or previously used brush dedicated to that product only. For example, keep the brush for OG 805 clearly marked and use only for OG 805.
4. Clean up with OA 901 Essence. Clean the brushes thoroughly and allow them to air dry. Each overglaze should have its own clearly marked bottle of Essence. Using the same bottle of Essence can cause cross contamination and affect the fired outcome.
5. A second coat of gold re-fired over the first one will improve the richness of the look.
6. In cold weather, when the ware is cold or damp to the touch, heat up the pieces in the oven to approximately 150 degrees and then apply the gold.
