Sagging glass is fun and easy! Most people start out by sagging
wine or other decorative glass bottles. Here are some simple instructions to
get you started.
1. Wash the bottle well, inside and out, using
dishwashing liquid. Remove the labels and scrub the outside well. Allow the
bottle to dry completely inside and out.
2. If you have a mold for
sagging the bottle, place the bottle on the mold. Be sure the mold has been
dusted with a releasing powder first. If you do not have a sagger mold you can
still try this fun technique. Just be sure your kiln shelf is covered by a good
coat of kiln wash (that does not contain silica), then dust the area with
releasing powder. We have been told the releasing powder is not necessary, but
have no experience with this method - so, try it at your own
risk.
3.Fire to cone 016 with the lid propped open an inch. Fire on low
for 30 minutes, then medium for 30 minutes. Close the lid and turn kiln to high
until the cone matures. Allow the kiln to cool completely before opening.
Opening the kiln too soon could cause the glass to crack or break when the
cooler air hits the warm glass.
Note: Sagger molds and release powder
are available from Unique Glass, found on the Crest Molds website.
