This technique gives a wonderful opalescent shine. Start by
applying 3 coats of Duncan's White Satin glaze
SN352, allowing each coat to dry
before applying the next coat. Paint on a scene, animal, flowers, whatever you
like. We painted a fish from one of Duncan's Essentials Classes using Concepts
Underglaze for Bisque. Completely finish your design before
continuing.
Now comes the fun part! Place a small puddle of Concepts
Light Heather CN101 on a tile.
Add another puddle of Concepts Light Purple
CN291. Use a large, round
brush like a TB737. Dip the brush in
water - do not remove excess water! Dip the brush in one of the colors and work
the paint into the water in the brush. Now, holding the brush parallel to the
plate swirl the brush around in a random pattern. The idea is to let the water
spread the paint and apply just enough paint to show up lightly on the white
background. Go back and get more water and the second color paint, and swirl
again, next to and into the first color. Work all around the plate, alternating
between colors, being careful not to get the color on your design area. When
the entire background is covered, allow the piece to dry. Apply dots with
French Dimensions White FD258
randomly on the background. When dry, stilt and fire to cone 06. That's all
there is to it. Very simple and quick to do. And, no need to clear glaze as the
glaze is already applied to the piece.

Last month we gave you this Cover Coats and Alcohol technique:
"Apply three coats of underglaze to greenware. When dry, drop alcohol
randomly over the greenware. The alcohol creates a look like halo circles. Fire
to cone 04. Apply clear glaze and fire to cone 06."
Since then we have
had several people email to let us know that this technique DOES NOT WORK. The
information we gave you was in good faith from a customer who wished to remain
anonymous. We did not have time to try this technique ourselves.
Duncan's new website is up and running, and the Duncan board is
back. Be sure to sign up and join in the fun to learn something new.
