Properly applied Mother of
Pearl will give your special ceramic piece the illusion of a rainbow of
color. Many people write to ask how they should apply Mother of Pearl (MOP) or
how can they fix their mistakes with Mother of Pearl. Using this wonderful
luster is very easy and can give beautiful results. Follow these basic
guidlines:
- Be sure that the surface of your piece is free of dust, skin
oils and lotions to ensure proper adhesion. Wipe surfaces with rubbing alcohol
prior to applying the overglaze (except when used over crackle glazes.).
- Always apply with a brush that is designated solely for use
with Mother of Pearl to prevent contamination. OR use a cotton swab. The cotton
tip makes it perfect for either of the looks listed below, and there is no
cleanup!
- Do not stir or shake the MOP.
- Place a small amount of overglaze on a glazed palette and be
sure to close up the bottle to avoid contamination or spills.
- For a swirled look swirl on 1 coat, overlapping strokes.
- For a smooth look brush on all strokes in the same direction.
- Correct application should produce a light blue tint.
- If you used a brush, clean it in Essence and let dry.
- Overglazed ware can be fired while it is still wet, but be
careful not to touch the wet MOP as it will easily smear or smudge. The kiln
must be clean, well ventilated (do not overload) and follow a normal firing
schedule.
- Stilt and fire Mother of Pearl to shelf cone 020.
MOP is glossy when applied over a gloss glaze, and dull when
applied over satin or matte glazes. If you missed a spot, go back and add more
while the Mother of Pearl is still wet. If you accidentally apply MOP to the
wrong spot, remove it with a cotton swab dipped in Essence.
That's it!
Try MOP, you'll love the look!
One word of caution - be sure to use MOP
and all third fire glazes in a well ventilated area. The smell is quite
potent.
Duncan recently announced the release of seven new
Satin Glazes and the re-release of two
Satin favorites; Black and Christmas Green. The colors reflect the latest in
home decor trends. The new palette includes 5 soft pastel colors and 4 vivid
and intense colors including a true red.
Satin glazes move very little
during firing which make them ideally suited for creative design work, majolica
and controlled glazing techniques. These glazes should be in stock before the
end of June.
