Ceramics Insider Tip - Lacy Gold

We thought we would share this interesting technique for applying gold overglaze. This technique produces a beautiful lacy effect that can be seen on Duncan's green and turquoise vase shown on our gold page. Here is how to do it:.

First glaze and fire the ceramic piece. The green and turquoise piece was painted with CoverCoats on greenware, fired to bisque, then clear glazed and fired to cone 06.

To add the gold lace you will need - plastic wrap (10" x 10"), your fired, glazed ceramic piece, Gold Overglaze of your choice (OG801, OG802, or OG805) and a clean tile that has been wiped down with alcohol and allowed to dry. Do not touch the tile after drying.

Wear gloves! Wipe your glazed and fired ceramic piece with alcohol to remove all fingerprints. Allow alcohol to dry. Then pour a small pool of gold overglaze on to the tile.

Scrumple, crumple or scrunch the plastic wrap into a ball. Holding the ball by one side, dip the wrinkled plastic into the gold, and then begin lightly pressing it against your ceramic piece. Repeat this process until all gold in the puddle is used up (do NOT return gold to the bottle) or until there is a lacy covering of gold on the ceramic piece. Do not touch gold areas. Gold overglaze can be fired while still wet, but handle carefully to avoid smearing. Stilt and fire to cone 019.

Bonus Tip! More Interesting Christmas Tree Ideas

This tip is quick and easy. You will need one freshly poured greenware tree with base, in the leatherhard stage. Use a sharp scalpel to cut various sized star shapes in the tree. Also add a few tiny round holes and pin holes. Be sure to cut out the base to allow for a light and wire to be added. Clean the greenware and sponge to smooth edges of cutouts both inside and outside the tree. Paint the tree and base white using CC101 CoverCoats white - or a color of your choice. Fire to cone 04.

Glaze with your favorite clear glaze and fire. Or antique with a soft blue or other color if desired. Glaze and fire. For a really special effect apply Mother of Pearl with the side of a cotton swab and fire to cone 018. Now assemble your tree using a lamp kit which can be found at your hardware store and light up a dark room with stars.
