- I would like to share with others an inexpensive way to
stilt your handbuilt clay (Red Earthenware) flowers and mushrooms w/stalks
(stalks are separate) after glazing. First, I bought STEEL nails of different
heights (2" & up) and used the 1" column posts. Place 3 nails, with the
nail head placed down, inside of the post where it looks like a tripod. Then
place your pieces on top. Egads! It works! I also use a porcelain doll head
stilter and place different heights of wire and nails (head up) to balance the
pieces on top. The nails are a little charred but can be used several times.
To stilt the glazed stalks, place 3 column posts on the shelf and
suspend 2 steel wires across the columns, then place the stalks across the
wires like planks on a bridge. However, do not space them to close together or
they will stick together. I am still working on another method in order to
perfect stilting the stalks so if anyone has a better idea, please share it
with me.
I thoroughly enjoy experimenting with all types of glazes on
the flowers, mushrooms and stalks because the best part is the finished
product. They are beautiful and colorful in my garden. Have fun and I hope that
my ideas work for you too...
