Ceramics Insider Tip - The difference between Non-Toxic and Dinnerware Safe explained.

This is a subject that everyone has wondered about at one time or another. Once it is explained the difference is basic and simple.

NON TOXIC - Refers to the product in the jar. Non Toxic means that the product contains no harmful ingredients (lead, cadmium, etc) in sufficient quantites that could be harmful to humans, including children. If you are working with children or the elderly you should always use Non-Toxic products.

DINNERWARE SAFE/FOOD SAFE - Refers to the finished, fired surface of the glaze. Once the product is fired according to the instructions on the product label, the fired surface may be used in contact with food or beverage without leaching potentialy harmful elements from the glaze into the food or beverage.

Keep in mind that a glaze can be "toxic", but be food safe. For example, GL612 has lead in it which burns out during firing leaving the finished product food safe. On the other hand, many glazes, such as Crystal and Crackle glazes, are Non Toxic, but are not safe for food. You cannot assume that a glaze which is Non Toxic is food safe or vice versa. Always read the label carefully, use the glaze accordingly, and fire to the manufacturers' specifications.
