The problem: You want to paint hearts on a mug (for example), but
you would like to paint the background a solid color underglaze first and
you're out of Mask n Peel.
The solution: Cut your heart shapes out of Contact paper (that
self sticking paper used to cover kitchen shelves and things.) Peel off the
backing and stick the hearts to your mug. Be sure to stick the hearts on
smoothly and press the edges down tightly. Now you can paint your background,
allowing the color to go over the hearts if you like. Before the paint dries
completely, peel off the hearts to reveal the unpainted bisque underneath. Now,
carefully paint your hearts the desired color, and when they are dry, add
detail, shading, etc.
This technique can be done on greenware, using CoverCoats and EZ
Strokes, or on bisque, using Concepts Underglaze for Bisque.
You can also use Contact paper to mask shapes while texturizing
greenware with vinegar water. Just attach your Contact paper shapes to your
greenware, then sponge or brush the vinegar water solution to your background
greenware. Watch the greenware bubble and fizz as the clay is textured. When
texturing is complete, peel off Contact paper to see the smooth design areas
underneath. Paint as desired.
The Contact paper keeps the vinegar from reacting with the
greenware. Where the Contact paper covers the greenware the texture of the
piece stays smooth and even.
Duncan has issued a voluntary recall of their new LL100 low lead
glaze. Duncan has become aware that finished pieces made with the new LL100 may
exceed the federal limits for lead leaching when exposed to acidic foods for
extended time periods.
Duncan is recommending that if you have used this glaze on a
ceramic piece you should use that piece only for decorative purposes. If you
have sold any pieces made with this glaze please let your customers know that
the piece is not food safe and should be used for decoration only.
