Insider Tip ~ Glaze Layering
There are as many ways to layer glazes, as
there are glazes to be layered! Some of the best combinations are done with
Courtyard glazes such as CY103 Desert Pine (1 coat) as a base with 1 coat of
CY112 Saddle Clove over it. Then add one coat of CY102 Sagebrush or any other
lead free green glaze for an interesting effect. This is a combination you'll
have to try for yourself - it's indescribable!
Or try layering one coat
of IN1037 Leaf Green as shading detail over two coats of IN1640 Foliage Green
when painting leaves on a glazed plate. Use the same idea to layer other
translucent colors for painting flowers, too!
For an interesting crystal
effect, paint 3 coats CR911 Ocean Mist along the bottom third of a vase or
plant pot. Slightly overlap CR901 Waterfall over the CR911 Ocean Mist and apply
two coats on the middle third of the piece. Then apply 2 coats of CR902 Night
Sky on the top third, again overlapping the CR901 Waterfall slightly. Add lots
of crystals to the final coats on the top 2/3 of the piece. The more crystals
on the top portion the better. To see complete instructions on this technique
visit the Duncan website.

The new Mayco Pottery Coats, Chunkies and Elements glazes are also
beautiful when layered. For a fascinating pottery effect, apply 3 coats of
PC502 Speckled Buff, then apply 2-3 coats of EL205 Jade Pebbles from the top to
about 2/3 of the way down the piece. White Cascade goes on over the top portion
of the Jade Pebbles to complete the look. See an example here:

Don't forget that
Gare glazes can be layered, too. Try combinations of your favorite Garden
glazes such as 3 coats of NTG9332 Rusty Earth with one coat of NTG9347 Bluebell
for the look of wood. Or, for a traditional pottery look, paint your ceramic
piece with 3 coats of solid black glaze, then paint 1-2 coats NTG9520 Volcanic
Ash on the top portion and finish with NTG9555 Magic Flow just along the rim.

As you can see, the combinations you can make with layered glazes are
endless. Letting your imagination go wild can give your work spectacular,
unique and rewarding
results.
