* Ceramics Insider Tip ~ Versatile Sandstars

Sandstars are not your ordinary glaze. They are basically matte glazes with tiny shiny specks of the same color glaze mixed throughout. But, their main claim to stardom is the fact that they are so versatile. They may be combined with other colors from their own product family to create custom colors. They may be accented or tinted with EZ Strokes underglazes to make new custom colors. Sandstars may be applied to greenware or bisque.

Gloss glazes can be painted over Sandstars for contrasting textures and French Dimensions can be applied over them to create raised accents. Raised effects can also be made by painting 3 to 4 coats of Sandstars in a design, or by applying them over previously fired Cover Coats underglazes. They may be butted up against each other or other glazes. Use Sandstars side by side with Envisions or River Rocks or Courtyard Art Glazes. Sandstars are also popular for use with sgraffito work on greenware. Paint greenware with Sandstars and, while the glaze is still damp, scratch through the glaze to the clay below making lines, swirls, dots, or other design.

Try this Duncan technique - Apply 3 coats of your favorite Sandstars color to your cleaned greenware and fire to cone 04. Sponge wax resist randomly over the piece and, when the wax resist is dry, sponge clear glaze over the entire piece. Carefully wipe glaze off of the wax resist area and fire to cone 06 The wax burns off, leaving the original matte Sandstars showing between bright shiny glazed areas of the same Sandstars glaze. If you prefer not to fire glaze on greenware you can still try this technique. Simply paint the Sandstars onto 04 bisque and omit the 04 firing instructions above.

See what wonderful ideas you can come up with by using these glazes!
