Insider Tip ~ Showing off your Crackle Glazes
Crackle Glazes give a
unique and beautiful look to statues, candleholders and other items which will
not be handled on a daily basis and will not be used to hold or serve food.
Here's a tip on how to bring out the beauty of the crackles and make them show
up to best advantage:
Wear gloves while removing your crackle-glazed
piece from the kiln. This will prevent the oils on your skin from sealing the
cracks. Use a paper cup to water down black acrylic stain to an ink-like
consistency. Now, while wearing gloves, paint the black acrylic all over your
ceramic piece with a large paintbrush. When the piece is completely covered
with black, use a large damp sponge to wipe it down. Remove all excess color
from the piece. This will leave the black just in the cracks, showing them off
to perfection. You can even repeat the application of the black acrylic if more
cracks show up (and they will!) over the following weeks.
