Ceramics Tip ~ Sgraffito
Have you ever tried Sgraffito? Now is the time!
"What is Sgraffito?" you ask. The dictionary states: Sgraffito - a method
of producing a design on ceramics, murals, etc. by incising the outer coating
of slip or glaze to reveal the ground (greenware) of a different color. Note:
The outlines and/or detail lines will show up as white on your glazed and fired
piece. Here's how: Choose a plain GREENWARE piece - a vase would be a good
first project. Paint three or four coats of your favorite Cover Coats color
over the piece. A dark color is best. Trace on a pattern with lots of detail -
a bouquet of flowers is nice, or a Southwest scene. Now use a sgraffito tool -
http://www.creativeglazes.com/accessories/tools.htm to scratch through the
paint and carve out the design. Use a soft brush to whisk away the mess. Make
sure you scratch all the way through the paint to the greenware.
This
technique is best done while the paint is still damp. If the paint dries too
much it will chip as you scratch through it. If that happens, just use a sponge
to dampen a small area before you work on it, then keep the sponge handy to
keep the paint damp as you scratch. When your design is complete fire greenware
to cone 04. Later, clear glaze and fire to 06.
This can be a very effective
and beautiful technique. Once you've mastered it, try painting more than one
color and scratching to different depths for different looks. Most important:
As with anything we do in ceramics - remember to have fun!
