Ceramics Insider Tip ~ Red-Coats
Red-Coats underglazes produce intense,
opaque reds when fired under GL612 glaze. Because they contain cadmium they are
not recommended for use on dinnerware items.
Here are the general
guidelines to using these beautiful reds:
Always keep your brushes and
hands clean and free of salt and oil while painting ceramics. This is
especially important when using Red-Coats.
Apply three flowing coats to
shelf cone 04 bisque.
Allow the underglaze to dry thoroughly before
applying glaze Fire to shelf cone 06.
Red-Coats may be decorated with some
shades of EZ Strokes, but since these reds are opaque they will cover any
underlying EZ Stroke color. Red-Coats may be used for brushing, sponging and
most decorative brushwork.
Be careful, a thin application will cause the
red to turn white or grey during firing. Keep kiln well ventilated during
firing to allow for the brightest reds to develop. Red-Coats are formulated to
work with GL612 and will not work with
IN1001.
