Insider Tip ~ Working with Red Glazes
Red is such an exciting color
everyone wants to try it, but some people are afraid the color might not turn
out the way they want it to look. In the past, using a red glaze could be
tricky, there could be burned out looking white areas, or dark grey areas or
streaks. Now, with the new Envision reds, the worry is gone. Envision reds can
be fired in the same kiln-load as Envision greens or other colors with no
special precautions or adverse effects. However, if you want to use a leaded
red Gloss Glaze such as GL614, there are a few special steps you should take:
1. Always apply four FLOWING coats of glaze to cone-04 bisque with
complete drying between each coat. Complete drying of each coat before applying
the next is crucial. Try applying one coat of red glaze in the morning and the
next coat in the evening. Complete drying before firing is also a must.
2.
When firing leaded red pieces should be placed as low in the kiln as possible
and should be no closer than 2" from any other item in the kiln or the kiln
walls and shelves to avoid burning out the color.
3. Fire to cone 06, using
a witness cone on the same shelf as the red piece. Certain leaded red glazes
can be contaminated if fired in the same load as glazes containing copper,
usually green glazes. For instance, GL614 Matador Red is a glaze that does not
like to be fired with green.
We will cover Red-Coat Opaque Underglazes
in a future issue of The Ceramics Insider.
