Duncan Overglazes ~ Precious
Metals and Lusters
Each precious metal or luster should have its own
brush! Mark each gold brush and Mother of Pearl brush to avoid contamination by
other paints.
Apply to surfaces that are free of dust, skin oils and
lotions to ensure proper adhesion. Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol prior
to applying the overglaze (except when using over crackle glazes). Use only in
properly ventilated areas. Noxious fumes can be offensive. Be sure underlying
glaze is overglaze compatible.
Stilt to fire. Air flow around the piece
is important.
When using precious metals and lusters on the same piece,
apply and fire the metallics first. Clean brushes with Essence.

Note: Due to the
fluctuating price of gold we will no longer be able to give any quantity
discounts on gold products There is no way to change our shopping cart to not
include an item in the discounts. So, if a discount shows up in the shopping
cart it will not be part of the final price.
Overglaze Tips &
Techniques
These products are extremely prone to contamination.
Even sneezing near the open bottle will allow water to become encapsulated in
the product and affect the fired outcome. 1. Work in a well ventilated
area, not windy or dusty. 2. Because metals always settle, turn bottle over
and allow metals to fall, to mix the product to an even suspension. Do not
shake vigorously. This can cause tiny air bubbles which may look like black
spots on your fired gold. 3. Use a NEW or previously used brush dedicated to
that product only. For example, keep the brush for OG 805 clearly marked and
use only for OG 805. 4. Clean up with OA 901 Essence. Clean the brushes
thoroughly and allow them to air dry. Each overglaze should have its own
clearly marked bottle of Essence. Using the same bottle of Essence can cause
cross contamination and affect the fired outcome. 5. A second coat of gold
re-fired over the first one will improve the richness of the look. 6. In
cold weather, when the ware is cold or damp to the touch, heat up the pieces in
the oven to approximately 150 degrees and then apply the gold. 7. To apply
Mother of Pearl, use a cotton tipped swab. For small areas, wrap a small amount
of cotton on a toothpick and apply in the same manner, using a swirl or
circular motion. Simply discard, no brush to clean up!
Unfired Brite
Gold has a red/brown appearance. Unfired Premium Gold is dark
amber. Unfired White Gold is dark green. Unfired Mother of Pearl (MOP) is
light blue.
If fired hotter than recommended, MOP will have a frosted
appearance. Cooler firing leaves the color shiny and iridescent. If applied
over Satin glaze the MOP will be iridescent matte. If fired hotter than
recommended Gold can result in a cracked or webbed finish. With a cooler firing
gold may rub off.
